Boltless Shelving and Hand-Pick Operations

Standard boltless shelving is generally intended for hand-loaded cartons and parts. It should not receive forklift-loaded pallets unless the manufacturer specifically designed and rated the system for that application. Pallet rack is normally the appropriate system for mechanically placed pallet loads.

Shelf depth should fit the actual carton, tote or product while keeping labels visible and picks accessible. Shelving that is too deep can hide inventory and increase reaching. Shelving that is too shallow can leave products overhanging into aisles.

Each material fits different applications. Wire decking improves visibility and allows more open vertical paths, while particle board provides a continuous surface for small cartons and parts. Capacity, environment, fire-protection requirements, product size and manufacturer specifications should guide the choice.

Capacity depends on the complete configuration: shelf size, beams, supports, posts, number of levels and load distribution. A stated shelf rating often assumes a uniformly distributed load. A concentrated heavy part can create a different condition even when its weight is below the published shelf rating.

Place high-frequency items near packing and between comfortable knee and shoulder heights. Group related SKUs, use readable location labels, size pick faces to replenishment frequency and keep reserve inventory from blocking active picks. Reducing search time and walking distance often creates greater value than adding more shelves.
