Heavy-Duty Pallet Racking Systems: Which Type Fits Your Inventory?

Warehouse storage design begins with a practical question: what must the operation retrieve, in what sequence and with what equipment? The rack with the greatest theoretical pallet count may deliver poor daily productivity. Density gained at the expense of access, selectivity or throughput can create congestion and additional handling.
Selective pallet rack
Selective pallet rack—sometimes called standard pallet rack—gives a lift operator direct access to every pallet position from an aisle. It is usually the best starting point when a warehouse carries many SKUs, has relatively few pallets per SKU or needs frequent access to individual loads.
Best fit: Broad SKU mix, changing inventory and operations that value access over maximum density.
Primary tradeoff: Every rack face needs an operating aisle, so selective rack usually stores fewer pallets per square foot than deep-lane systems.
Double-deep pallet rack
Double-deep storage places one pallet behind another. Two selective rows are effectively combined into a deeper storage configuration, reducing the number of aisles and increasing pallet density.
The rear pallet cannot be accessed until the front pallet is removed. The system therefore works better when each storage lane holds the same SKU or compatible inventory. A reach truck with sufficient reach depth, lift height and capacity is normally required.
Best fit: Operations with multiple pallets per SKU that want more density without moving to a full drive-in system.
Primary tradeoff: Reduced selectivity and specialized equipment requirements.
Drive-in pallet rack
Drive-in rack creates deep storage lanes supported by rails. The forklift enters the rack lane to deposit or retrieve pallets. This eliminates many conventional aisles and can produce high storage density.
Most drive-in systems are loaded and unloaded from the same aisle, making them last-in, first-out. Drive-through configurations can be accessed from both ends and may support different inventory flow. They require additional aisle space and careful operational control.
Best fit: Large quantities of the same SKU, stable pallet dimensions and inventory that does not require immediate access to every load.
Primary tradeoff: Low selectivity, slower lane access and greater opportunity for forklift contact with the rack structure.
Push-back pallet rack
Push-back systems store pallets several positions deep on nested carts or inclined lanes. As a new pallet is loaded, it pushes the earlier pallets farther into the lane. When a pallet is removed, the next pallet advances toward the aisle face.
The forklift remains in the aisle, which can reduce rack-entry damage compared with drive-in storage. Each lane typically operates on a last-in, first-out basis.
Best fit: Multiple pallets per SKU, medium- to high-density requirements and faster aisle-side loading than drive-in rack.
Primary tradeoff: Higher equipment cost, less direct access and the need for consistent pallet quality and load control.
Cantilever rack
Cantilever rack replaces front columns with arms extending from vertical columns. The open face makes it easier to store long or irregular products such as lumber, pipe, tubing, steel, furniture and building materials.
Arm length, arm capacity, column spacing, product deflection and lift-equipment approach must be considered together. Cantilever rack can be single-sided against a wall or double-sided for access from both sides.
Best fit: Long, bulky or irregular loads that do not store efficiently on conventional pallets.
Primary tradeoff: It is application-specific and normally less efficient for standard palletized inventory.
Stack racks
Stack racks are portable storage frames placed directly on the floor and stacked vertically when loaded. They are useful when permanent rack is not justified or when inventory dimensions and volumes change seasonally.
Because the frames can be moved, nested or disassembled—depending on design—stack racks offer flexibility for temporary storage, tires, furniture, fabric rolls and unusual products.
Best fit: Seasonal inventory, temporary storage and products needing a dedicated portable frame.
Primary tradeoff: Access to a lower frame may require moving upper frames, and floor condition and stacking discipline are critical.
A practical selection framework
Before choosing a system, document:
- SKU count and pallets per SKU.
- Pallet dimensions, weight, condition and load overhang.
- Required inventory rotation, such as FIFO or LIFO.
- Daily pallet moves and peak throughput.
- Existing and planned lift equipment.
- Clear building height, column spacing and obstructions.
- Commodity classification and sprinkler limitations.
- Expansion, relocation and seasonal requirements.
A warehouse may use several systems at once. Selective rack can serve fast-moving mixed inventory, push-back can hold reserve pallets and cantilever rack can handle long products. The strongest design matches each storage zone to a specific operational job.
